Tramore Hidden History
The Men’s Diving Board
A simple wooden post stands on the beach just off the Men’s slip in Tramore. It stands there as a relic of the past. In Victorian times, segregated swimming areas were the order of the day. The Men’s Slip as it is called now was originally known as the Men’s bathing area. The Women’s bathing area is about 100 yards down the beach and is now known as the Ladies slip.
This photo shows the Men’s diving board going out from the slip into the sea. The wooden post that stands all alone on the beach today was part of the support structure of the diving board.
The photo also shows the bathing boxes that were used for the men to change into their bathing togs. A strong sense of modesty was expected. However, many complaints appear in the newspapers over the years about men swimming totally naked from this slip.
