Tramore Hidden History
The Bullán Stone
In the grounds of the Holy Cross Church of Tramore a stone with a hollow in it sits on a grass verge. It is not noticed or commented on by the people that pass by it each day. It is a Bullaun Stone. Irish for Bullaun is Bullán a ‘bowl or water container.’
Such stones were associated with early Christian Churches. The Bullaun Stones have a man made hollow in the centre. They were used as holy water fonts or baptismal fonts in the early Churches.
This stone was brought to Tramore many years ago for safe keeping. It was taken from the old Church of Saint Mac Liag who was a disciple of St. Declan of Ardmore. The old Church of Mac Liag is situated in the townland of Kilmacleague West.
