Tramore Hidden History

The Shipwrecks of Tramore

In the past Tramore Bay was known as the “The Graveyard of Ships”. There are over 150 ship wrecks recorded in the bay.

From time to time, the skeletons of some of these wrecks appear on the beach after winter storms. Some ships came into the Bay by mistake, thinking that they were entering Waterford Harbour.
Others were pushed in by storm force winds.

A ship finding itself in difficulty in the Bay had two options:
To drop its anchors and ride out the storm or beach the ship on the sandy shore and save the crew and cargo.

For the ships that took the option to beach. The cargo was removed and then stripped of all valuable items such as sails, ropes, masts and all decking. These are the skeletons of the ships that we see after the storms.

Do keep an eye out for them, they are worth seeing.
