Public Drinking Fountain
What you are looking at is a Victorian Public Drinking Fountain.
It carries the Civic Message “Keep the Pavement Dry”
A galvanised cup on a chain would have been attached to the fountain for the convenience of those using the fountain. T Kennedy Patentee and Kilmarnock are embossed on the fountain. The design was patented by Thomas Kennedy and the fountain was produced in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland. The Kennedy Patent Water Valve Co was established in 1863. It later merged with Glenfield Foundry to form Glenfield & Kennedy. Their water fountains are to be found all over the world. It survives in its original location just across the road from Tramore
Train Station on Train Hill. The function of this water fountain was to provide a source of clean drinking water for the travelling public.
