RNLI Collection Box on Doneraile Walk

Over the years I have often been asked;

“What is the old metal box on the Doneraile Walk and what was it used for?”

It is painted black and has two slots in the top. It has no visible marking and is in need of repair. Members of the Tramore RNLI have recently identified it as an old cast iron Victorian RNLI Collection Box. These collection boxes were placed in prominent positions around the coasts of Britain and Ireland. They were painted in bright colours to attract the attention of those who might wish to donate to the RNLI. The Doneraile walk was an ideal spot to locate the box as it was the main area in Tramore for Tourists and Locals to stroll and take in the magnificent view of Tramore Bay. The box on the Doneraile would have been painted in bright colours. Below are shown two other boxes painted in their original colours. Each box had its own colour code.
